Myth: High protein (low carb) diet is effective and safe

Fact: This diet supposes that a person should eat only protein rich food, such as fish, meat, eggs and milk products, and avoid eating the food rich in carbohydrates, such as bread, potatoes, macaroni, porridge and even some sorts of vegetables and fruits. But this diet faces several serious problems.

The first problem is connected with kidneys which have to work more active to remove the rests of fats and proteins from the body. Water is also removed with them, and all these substances together press the kidneys hard enough to cause definite disorders, including headache, dehydration, fits of giddiness and vomiting.

The second problem is that the diet is “not tasty”, it forbids you to eat almost all products which we use to indulge ourselves, such as chocolate and even fruits. The last is especially hard to deal with, and many people give up and back to usual menu before the diet gives any results. And those people who strong enough to bear the diet for a long time risk to get different mood disorders because the lack of vitamins.

So, if you want to try the high protein diet you should first consult your doctor and learn either you have any health precautions. Otherwise you seriously risk to hurt your health.

Myth: The food without fat is always good and healthy

Fact: Even if a product is labeled as low-fat or non-fat you should make sure that it does not contain any other high-calorie substances. The truth is that such products usually contain other additives, such as starch or molasses, to make them more tasty. And is there any sense to rid of fat calories and to get carb calories?

Myth: Dairy products are harmful for heart and cause obesity

Fact: The only high-calorie dairy products are butter and margarine which really may lead to essential weight growth. Especially you should try to avoid margarines which are over processed fat and are not too useful for organism. Butter, however, is and you may eat it in normal quantities. The same can be said about other dairy product, such as yoghurts and cheeses and about milk itself. Moreover, the use of these products is necessary and almost obligatory for any human being.

The explanation of this lies in the fact that dairy products serve as the main source of calcium for people, and calcium is the most important element that makes our bones (including teeth, of course) healthy and strong. That’s why milk is especially important for children, but for adult it less important for just a bit. Milk products give us vitamin D too, which is used by body to normalize calcium and phosphorus levels and thus also helps to keep bones strong.

If you want to minimize the amounts of fat gained from dairy products you may just use low-fat or non-fat brands which can be found in every store. Thereby you’ll get necessary nutrition and avoid extra fat.

Myth: Vegetarian diet is the best because it simultaneously healthy and helps to lose weight

Fact: It is partly true, if we talk about not absolute vegetarian diet which prohibits to eat not only meat, but also dairy products and eggs. The problem here is that exactly these products are the main source of vitamins B12 and D and some crucially important microelements such calcium, iron and zinc. And if the lack of proteins, which are usually got from meat, in vegetarian diet can be filled in with beans and nuts, the lack of vitamins of animal origin and of some microelements may be not so easily overcome. Unless you use not purely vegetarian diet that allows you to eat dairy products and eggs or at least a fish. Otherwise you will either suffer from lack of necessary substances or will have to waste time and money searching for rare fruits and vegetables which could give you microelements and vitamins which are absent in usual food of vegetable origin.

Also you must keep in mind that vegetarian diet by itself does not give any guarantees of weight loss because porridges and some sorts of vegetables are quite high-calorie. So, using this kind of diet, you must keep an eye on what and how much you eat that makes little difference in comparison with any usual diet.

Myth: Fad diets may help you achieve permanent weight loss

Fact: This kind of diets proposes to avoid some defined group of foods and promises good and permanent result, but it’s hard to believe in such stories. The main reason is that fad diets are usually unhealthy because they cut out products without taking into consideration the needs of the body and concentrate only on the quantity of calories. And any diet which ignores the needs of organism in different substances is extremely harmful.

Remember that considerable and permanent results in weight loss may be reached only in combination of well-thought diets, which suppose good nutrition, and of intensive physical activity.

That’s all for today.

Sincerely Yours,

John
